Who is required to collect and remit the restaurant tax?
Any business in Shelbyville or Simpsonville that sells prepared food or drinks is responsible for collecting and submitting the restaurant tax.
What if I need to update my restaurant's information?
No problem. If your contact info, ownership, or business status changes, please use the registration form to submit your updated details or contact us directly.

The customer. The restaurant can choose to absorb the tax or pass it along to its customers. The majority of restaurants pass along the tax to the customer, which must be indicated on the receipt as “Restaurant Tax.”
How is the restaurant tax used?
ShelbyKY Tourism uses its portion of the restaurant tax (50% of collected taxes) for marketing, advertising, and promotion of Shelby County as a premier travel destination, generating new customers for your business.
The remaining 50% of restaurant tax funds are returned to the city in which they were collected — Shelbyville or Simpsonville — to be used for tourism-related, quality of life initiatives.
